Sara Ramirez: Is ‘Grey's Anatomy' Killing Off Callie?

Last week, “Grey’s Anatomy” executive producer Shonda Rhimes made a lot of people nervous when she confirmed to TV Guide Magazine that a beloved Grey’s character will die in the ABC drama’s May 17th finale. “A lot of our writers were crying, which is a very rare thing,” Rhimes told the magazine. “There’s some really shocking, horrible moments.”
Rhimes also told TV Guide that the upcoming death is worse than the bloodbath the show’s writer’s crafted two years ago, when a man entered the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital with a gun and started hunting doctors like animals. “I’ve been sitting with my head in my hands for days,” Rhimes said of penning this season’s finale. “I understand the choice I made, but it scares me how fans are going to react.”

Already nervous about the news that one of their favorite characters would be killed off, Grey’s fans became extra-worried when Rhimes tweeted a quote from author Kurt Vonnegut that was intended to foreshadow this season’s finale: “Be a Sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — in order that the reader may see what they are made of.”

Rhimes said the quote was exactly what she needed to give her “the courage to do what we’re doing in the finale.”
But what exactly is Shonda “doing in the finale?” Who is getting killed off?
In the May 6th issue of TV Guide, Senior Editor William Keck revealed tons of spoilers from the finale about several characters, including Ben and Dr. Bailey, Mark and Lexie, and Cristina and Owen. But Keck, who interviewed Rhimes about the shocking death, said he knows nothing about Callie (the character played by Mexican actress, Sara Ramirez). “Curiously, Rhimes said there was nothing she could reveal about Callie and Arizona’s storyline in the finale,” writes Keck. “Which, frankly, has me worried.”
It has us worried, too. Especially since Callie has almost been killed off the show before. Last March, Callie was in a coma for an entire episode, her life (and her unborn baby’s life) hanging in the balance. She managed to make it through in the end….

Still, killing off Callie would be a bold move by Rhimes. Sara Ramirez has emerged as one of the show’s biggest stars, and her character, Callie, is now a fan favorite. A few months ago, Rhimes said she herself has seen Ramirez grow on the show.“Her talent has always been amazing, but her confidence in her talent has blossomed in a way that has been beautiful to see,” Rhimes said of Ramirez. “We have 14 actors on the show, and she’s become one of the leaders. She’s kind to the new actors who come in and she tries to extend herself in a friendly way and she’s very open.”
Rhimes added that she has not only seen Ramirez evolve on the show, but also watched the actress’ character, Callie Torres, change too. “When Callie first came on, I had conceived of her as this girl who wore a lot of black eye liner—she actually says it in one episode that she was the girl who sat in the back of the class and ate her hair,” Rhimes said of Callie. “I feel like I’ve watched her blossom in terms of figuring out her sexuality, in terms of being a doctor, as a friend, and I think audiences have gotten to know her.”
It’s entirely possible that the big death could be Meredith or Derek, since the status of Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey’s contracts is unknown. But Rhimes recently said that after killing George (T.R. Knight) in 2009, she learned an important lesson: “There are certain characters on this show that you can’t kill. It wouldn’t be acceptable not only to the audience, but to me and my vision of what this show is. They can’t die.” Given that logic, it doesn’t seem likely that Rhimes would kill off the show’s central couple.

So just in case Shonda is thinking of killing Callie on the season finale, here are six reasons she shouldn’t do it!

1). Callie is a fascinating, complicated, complex, and endearing character who has become a Grey’s fan favorite. To quote Sara Ramirez, “I think that Callie has kind of grown up! And regardless of who she chooses to sleep with, I think the most important thing is that she keeps coming back to her belief in love.”
2). Her character Callie (an orthopedic surgeon) is three-dimensional and one of the only Latinas in primetime who isn’t a Latina stereotype!
3). Her work last season was Emmy-worthy!
4). She’s the only Grey’s cast member who has an amazing voice. What if Shonda wants to do another musical episode in the future? Note: it won’t work without Sara!
5). Callie is finally happy! In many ways, Callie is the heart of Seattle Grace. Don’t kill her off now when she has finally found the woman of her dreams! If anyone deserves a happy ending, it’s Callie!
6). Sara rocks! She has a huge fan club and they (we) watch the show every week just for her! Bring her back next season and we’ll be back, too!

Sara Ramirez Talks 'Grey's Anatomy,' Being Labeled A Latina Actress

Sara Ramirez is perhaps best known for her role as Dr. Callie Torres on “Grey’s Anatomy,” but playing a small-screen doctor isn’t where she got her start.

The actress, who trained at Juilliard, won a 2005 Tony Award for her role in “Monty Python’s Spamalot” and ABC executives were so enchanted that they offered her a part on the ABC show of her choice. She wisely signed on with the popular medical drama during its second season.

The 36-year-old actress spoke with The Huffington Post about memorizing medical jargon, the state of reality TV and what it’s like to be labeled a Latina actress in Hollywood today.

You’ve been on “Grey’s Anatomy” for quite some time. Do you think you could help out in a hospital if they were short staffed?
(Laughs) No! I could maybe pretend, if I could remember some of the terminology and spew some fancy, long medical jargon. I was literally sitting here trying to remember what I said at work today. I like to Google the stuff I’m talking about so I sort of have a sense of what I’m talking about, and I remember it for the scene and then something happens where your brain puts it in the trash.

It must be great to have job security.
It is. It’s steady. It’s a job, certainly from month to month, that you can count on. I definitely feel a sense of stability and I feel really lucky because it’s rare that a show sticks around for so long.

What’s your guilty pleasure show?
I used to watch “The Bachelor” but it’s lost my interest now. The reality shows are getting worse and worse. They’re out of control and have been for some time.

Don’t you love how every couple of years there’s an article on Latina actresses on the rise? What is your take on that?
Yeah, it’s like they keep lifting the same rock. Look, I want to word this carefully because I don’t want to upset people, because cultural identity is such a sensitive subject in this country. But I’m an American citizen, and yes, I’m Mexican and Irish-American. Does that mean every time they’re going to talk about Irish actresses they’re going to bring my name up? No. But when they talk about Latina actresses, you bet I’m going to be on there.

I’m proud of my heritage — don’t get me wrong — but at a certain point it does get a little disappointing … I think we get into patterns of just celebrating people over and over again. I am completely grateful and pleased for the attention and the recognition I’ve received for playing the roles that I’ve played. I’m very proud of my heritage. [But] I feel like we’re losing sight of what should truly be celebrated, that we have such great opportunity in this country and there are so many more people we’re not seeing.

There are plenty of Latina actresses that no one’s ever heard of … Some are really brown, some are light skinned and some look like they’re Caucasian, but it’s like we only want to identify with a certain kind of look and celebrate that under the guise that this is a “Latina actress.”

And there’s the stereotype surrounding “curvy” Latina actresses.
I think we get a little caught up in these stereotypes. I myself have been part of that. I’ve been a part in celebrating curves. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrating curves. I think the issue is around pigeonholing people to represent only one thing, and once you’re identified with that one thing, you are that one thing forever.

When I’ve lost weight, some fans get very upset because they want me to stay curvy. But my own self worth and wellness regime has to do with my well being and longevity, so if I make the choice to take care of myself and the outcome is losing weight, it’s disappointing that there might be some backlash. It’s like, “Wow, really?”

… But I do understand how there is a teenager somewhere in America who is feeling bad about herself because she has curves. Then she sees a woman who has curves playing a doctor — an intelligent doctor on TV who is flawed and lovable and going through her life just like everybody else — and she identifies with her and feels better about herself. There is the positive side to it too.

Five Musical Questions For The Cast Of Grey’s Anatomy: Sara Ramirez

Cast members of ABC’s hit drama Grey’s Anatomy are preparing for a live musical celebration to benefit The Actors Fund: Grey’s Anatomy: The Songs Beneath the Show. The evening, set for March 18th at UCLA’s Royce Hall, will feature selected songs from last season’s Musical Event and additional music from the Grey’s Anatomy songbook. It will also examine the way music has always been an integral part of the storytelling on Grey’s, and will provide fans with a rare behind the scenes glimpse at how the show is put together.

In anticipation of the show, we asked cast members to answer a few musical questions. Here’s what Sara Ramirez (aka Callie Torres) had to say!

AF: Name your favorite Broadway or movie musical of all time. SR: Into the Woods or Passing Strange

AF: Country or rock and roll? Why? SR: I don’t have a favorite genre of music because it’s always mood dependent. But I would say it’s a toss-up between all 80s and Alternative. I tend to be very nostalgic so I love 80s music. It usually makes me want to dance, and takes me back to a more innocent time in my life. I love Alternative music because it’s usually fueled by deeper concepts that make me want to think, as well as get lost in the music.

AF: What’s on your iPod these days? SR: I have a diverse mix of music, but some examples of what I have are Goyte, Foo Fighters, Alicia Keys, The Cure, Adele, The Rescues, The Killers, Ella Fitzgerald, Fleetwood Mac, Kings of Leon, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Andrew Bird, Black Eyed Peas, Corinne Bailey Rae…

AF: Do you play a musical instrument? Which one(s)? SR: I took 4 years of piano when I was in my early teens, but now it takes me a while to plunk something out.

AF: Can you tell us a song you’ll be singing on March 18? SR: I can’t say that it’s set in stone yet. What do you think I should sing?
